This marriage ended in divorce which led him to my 2x great grandmother Felonise.
Born: 25 FEB 1842 in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana.
Died: Feb 16, 1919, Marksville, LA. (see death certificate) Married: 27 OCT 1863 in Avoyelles Parish
At this marriage, Felonise was the widow of Nicholas McMahon, who died in 1863 in Avoyelles Parish. Nicholas McMahon was an immigrant from Ireland who came in from the Massachusetts area, and I was always curious about what he was doing in Avoyelles just before and during the Civil War. One of the witnesses of their marriage also seems to be from elsewhere (V.O. King).
It’s interesting to note that Nicholas was dead only a month after she married Louis. Was he killed? He was a young man. How did Louis F manage to wed her so quickly after leaving his wife Marie Aimee MAYEUX of 31 years and 7 kids? Aimee died just three years later after his marriage to Felonise.
Edgar F Bordelon
Born: December 10, 1864, in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana (per death certificate) and December 8, 1864, per baptism certificate. He was baptized Feb 28, 1865 - St Paul Mansura. His godparents were his aunt Rosalie Bordelon and Ferdinade Gagnard.
Died of pneumonia in East Carrol Parish (Soundheimer, LA) on Nov 7, 1953, but was buried back in Marksville on Nov 9, 1953. At this time, he was living with his daughter in Soundheimer - just north of Tallulah, LA, along the Mississippi River. His health was in decline and is probably the reason he was up there for so long. He was here for only one year before his death. (See death certificate)
b: November 8, 1866, in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana (per baptism certificate)
Eulalie Bordelon
b: FEB 1870 in Avoyelles Parish,Louisiana.
Known to the family as "Grand Tante Lyle." The 1900 Census shows she had three children, with two still alive: Zelia & Alice.
It was bizarre how Felician left his wife Marie and seven children after 32 years and married a very young and recently widowed Elonise Dauzat, my great, great grandmother. She married Felician only a month after her first husband’s death. As detailed below, her first husband, Nicholas McMahon, who died in 1863 during the Civil War, was young and a direct immigrant from Ireland. They had a daughter, Agnes, born on February 2, 1862, in Avoyelles, Louisiana. I can't find any records of her life or death.
Nicholas was living in Marksville in 1860, and records show he came in through Ellis Island, through Massachusetts, and to Louisiana. His occupation was listed as a "ditch maker." I would love to know the circumstances surrounding his death and if it had anything to do with the Civil War that was happening at the time. Maybe it was just a sickness, I dont know, as I cannot find any details of his death.
There are also records to indicate someone with the name Nicholas McMahon, who was the same age and in the US Army, but the location and dates didn't match the fact that he was in Marksville in 1860. I was surprised to see Elonise marry such an older man in Louis soon after Nicholas McMahon’s death. She wasn’t pregnant because Edgar was born over a year later.
I think Louis’s stable life and mature status attracted my young, widowed ancestral grandmother to Louis. He must have been somewhat wealthy because he and his mother owned a few slaves, detailed below. She may have jumped at a rare opportunity in these challenging times and after losing a husband. There are stories from her grandchildren that she had to get her leg amputated at one point in her life, but I cannot confirm this.
Felician and Felonise have three children: Eulalie, my great-grandfather Ones, and Edgar, known to live on the second floor of the building next to the old Fox Theater in Marksville. My grandfather Walter would visit him at this location on occasion. It was told that Edgar and his wife Ellen adopted their child, Mona, as appears on the census later in this section. Mona was only a teenager when Edgar and Ellen were well into their 60s.
Louis Felicien Bordelon and his mother owned a few slaves, as seen on the 1860 Slave Schedule.
Louis owned 1 (16yo) female, and his mother (widow Zenon Bordelon) owned 3 - ages 25, 3 and 2.
I know very little about Ones’ sister, Eulalie, other than what I have detailed below.
The 1850 Census (below) shows this Louis with his first wife Aimee living between the widow Etienne St. Romain and Andrew & Elizabeth Armstrong. There were 6 children at home.
The 1870 Census shows Louis F and Felonise living next door to Auguste & Auline Dauzat. They had 3 children at home. This census does correctly show Ones (b.1866)
Louis Felicien Bordelon and his mother owned a few slaves, as seen on the 1860 Slave Schedule above.
Felonise or Mrs Felician Bordelon's death certificate.
1930 Census shows Edgar with wife Ellen ?? and had one child, Mona, who was believed to have been adopted.
Ones's brother and my great uncle Edgar Bordelon. He was an Avoyelles Parish Constable in 1903. Owned and operated a general store along the banks of Red River.
